Visit at a technical school in Tamil Nadu with the senior students |
24th August, 2011 |
Since several of our youngsters showed interest for a vocational education in stead of an academic one, SISP is on the look-out for vocational training facilities for some of our students and junior staff. On April 28 we visited with the senior students, some junior employees and some teachers, the technical school from the Belgian NGO “Friends of Kottar” in Tamil Nadu. We left from our centre with the SISP bus around 10 am and had a warm welcome by the director in charge and got delicious Tamil meals and a tour of their University under the same NGO. After lunch we left for their nearby Industrial Training Centre. It was founded tens of years ago and offers training in auto mechanics, electronics, and fitting. Their number of students is drastically coming down after the reconstruction of the coastal part of the state because of the Tsunami, and there are threatened with closure. We hoped, after some meetings with the Belgian representatives and the Indians in charge of these NGO, that we could maybe cooperate. Our youngsters got a tour of the center and explanation of their works, they could also meet with the present students. Het was an interesting visit but, after evaluation, we had to decide that because of several practical complications (distance, accommodation, language = Tamil, ...), it is not the ideal solution for our youngsters. Mohan is visiting now Industrial Training Centers in and around the nearby capital Thiruvananthapuram, to find out if any of them is suitable for our youngsters.
