On 20th January a Parent-Teacher meeting was held at the SISP Centre. Approximately thirty-five parents/guardians attended - a slightly disappointing number, given that we have around 120 children in education (80 at the SISP Centre and 40 in state schools). Also present were seven teachers and SISP President, Paul Van Gelder.
Paul opened the meeting with a short speech which stressed the importance of education in today's world. Without education, the future of our children would be bleak, he said. He requested parents to work in partnership with SISP and to give as much support to their children's education as possible through regular attendance and allowing time and space for homework.
Education Coordinator, Mr. George, then introduced the teachers to the parents. He gave details of the school's organisation, classes, extra-curricular activities, unit tests and exams. He went on to describe the issues of problem children, home visits, transport of the sick to hospitals, and how SISP helps with obtaining birth certificates and school certificates.
Mr George continued with a discussion of the problems of absenteeism and lack of hygiene care. The main topic of the meeting was the proposal to set up a compulsory savings scheme for each child, by saving Rs.50 from the Rs.200 monthly allowance using a passbook scheme. Parents of children under the age of 18 could make withdrawals in the event of hardship, otherwise, for children over the age of 18, only they could make withdrawals themselves. This proposal was unanimously agreed.
After a tea break, parents were given the opportunity to discuss any problems or issues with the teachers.
Overall, the meeting was considered a success, even though the attendance could have been better. Further thought needs to be given on how to get greater parent participation at future Parent-Teacher meetings. |
