Report from Paul VTJ, our webmaster from Belgium, currently at SISP, India

At 07:00 in the morning, before visiting Marina and Iman's house, I quickly walked over to the construction site to see how things were going. On the way I heard the noise of the drill. It was still in the process of cutting through rocks. In spite of the noise I discovered some workmen asleep on the roof! There seemed no end to the work and I was getting quite concerned. Not least, I was concerned for the neighbours who, despite shielding with plastic sheets, were being covered with stone dust. The young workers (who, according to Paul, come from the state of Tamil Nadu and work for less than half the price of local workmen. Where have we heard that one before?) were totally covered with the same substances that were coming out of the borehole.

Late in the evening, at around 19:00, I finally got the call to say that water had been struck! I hurridly got myself to the site to find water emerging from the back of the truck. When I got closer, I saw that they were considering whether they had only struck a small water pocket. Meanwhile, sitting on the side, a worker was sharpening the drill with a grinder because he wanted to be sure with some deeper drilling. At that time they were at a depth of 220 metres and they decided to drill a further 10 or 20 metres.

Tonight they will insert the plastic pipes into the borehole so that the hole to the surface remains open. Everyone is delighted and very relieved. Miss Kumari, the Manager of SISP, told me that she and her team had spent the entire day praying to the gods that the drilling for water would be effective. And tonight it seems their prayers have been answered. Paul will sleep well! "It's a big bite out of our budget, but what will we do if no water is found?" Thank goodness he trusted my conviction that we would be successful.
