Whilst digging out the foundations the workers encountered large rocks which slowed down the activities considerably. Either the rocks had to be anchored with steel rods or the workers had to dig them out. As you can see in the photographs the large rocks were dug from the red clay soil wherever possible.

A local construction yard in India is completely different to other First World countries. Generally you don’t find large cranes or machinary, and nearly everything is done by hand.

Also, wherever possible, materials are generally reused, as you can see on the pictures. The wooden planks and boards which were used as the formwork for the concrete is now being used to protect from the rain. Now that we are in the rainy season this gets special attention.

Will the building be finished at the end of December? Thats the question! Meanwhile the concrete for the inner walls has been been laid, rocks have been dug out and the workers have already brought bricks into the yard.

The devastating monsoon this year has effectively brought the construction work to a stand-still. And many of the local workers need to repair their own huts to make their shelters secure again so that their families can keep dry, after the destruction by the monsoon.
